Medical Employability Program

The Federal Occupational Health (FOH) Medical Employability Program (MEP) works with agency managers to find cost-effective ways of retaining employees and reducing attrition. We make recommendations pertaining to employees’ ability to perform the essential functions of a specific position as it relates to their medical condition(s).

The MEP team addresses a wide range of employee conditions, from lower back pain and limited vision, to bipolar disorder and autism. We help keep your agency workforce intact by working with management to bring employees back to work in a timely manner and by improving their ability to do their jobs. As a result, agencies maintain a high level of productivity.

What services can the MEP provide?

  • Reasonable Accommodation (including handicapped parking and workstation ergonomic evaluation)
  • Onsite clinical care, referral and follow-up
  • Return to Work/Office of Workers Compensation Programs (OWCP)
  • Case Management
  • Fitness for Duty (medical and psychological)
  • Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)/Advanced Sick Leave
  • Leave Bank Medical Management
  • Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Disability Package Review
  • Continuation of Health Benefits for Adult Children

FOH can also assist managers in providing risk communication on medical issues affecting employees, managers, and human resources personnel.

Who handles MEP cases?

The MEP medical staff is comprised of board certified Occupational & Environmental Medicine physicians, Physician Assistants, and Nurse Practitioners. The medical providers are trained to assess medical information with regard to validity and standard of medical care. Our providers adhere to applicable Federal regulations, including congressional policies and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) guidelines.

How does MEP ensure confidentiality?

MEP staff complies with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which addresses the security and privacy of health data, including electronic health care transactions and identifiers. MEP also fulfills the requirements set under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Rehabilitation Act.
